"I've usually done something wrong. I say too much, or too little, or the wrong thing at the wrong time, or I don't act the way I should, or I'm not in the right place when I should be or...well, I suppose you've probably got the picture now," She laughed wryly.

"Yes, I do," I nod. "Think so anyway. And I think that this is more proof than ever that you really need to rebel."

"I need to rebel because I do things wrong?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Nuh-uh," I shake my head. "You need to rebel because you're so convinced that you're doing things wrong."

"I'm not dellusioned, it's not that I've convinced myself. It's that I do in fact, do things wrong."

I shrug. "If you say so, and maybe you do, but it seems to me that maybe you're not really doing things exactly wrong.... I don't know, maybe I'm reading into things, but you seem like sort of a perfectionist, that's all." I shrug again and toy with the last knot I made, struggling against the temptation to make confetti out of it.

"You could be right, I suppose," She shrugged, "But naturally, I still think I am."

I laugh slightly. "But of course you do. Ah, well... I won't bother trying to argue with you then, especially when I acknowledge that there's a very good chance I'm wrong."

"Very clever," She laughed slightly, nodding.

"Isn't it?" I laugh. "Not to argue when you know you'll likely lose?" I shake my head. "Seems like it's almost a better personality trait to argue to the end, but...." I shrug.
|

"Okay, more noble to argue to the end. More sensible to choose not to fight a losing battle. This is why we're snakes and not lions, I suppose."

I give a short, derisive sort of laugh. "Well, that among other things, really." I pause. "How did you wind up there? I mean, I know that's kind of personal, but you don't seem that bad." I shrug.

"Never judge a book by it's cover," She reminded him.

"Right," I nod, not quite able to imagine that she'd ever done anything really Slytherin-worthy. But since when are you a good judge of people?

She glanced sideways at him, raising an eyebrow, "Do I really come across as that...?" She paused, not sure of the right word to use.

"Decent? Nice?" I suggest, then nod. "Yes. Then again... we've only been talking for how long?"

"Not long," She nodded, then smiled slightly, "Wow, I had no idea."

"That you came across as nice?" I ask, laughing slightly. "Are you offended at all?"
|
|

"Not offended," She laughed, "I'd just never assumed people thought I was too nice for Slytherin."

I shrug. "Maybe at another time I wouldn't. I don't know. Or maybe I have an unusually bad impression of people in our house. I think you're actually the third or fourth Slytherin I've met the last few weeks who was not remotely like the ones I'm used to."

"Or maybe I am and I'm just an extraordinarily good actress/liar."
|
|
|

"Which would still make you different from most of them," I say, raising my eyebrows. "But I don't see how you could be that good an actress."
|
|
|

"Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there," She arched an eyebrow, "But you're right anyway. I'm not a good actress."

"Very true," I acknowledge, tipping my head. "To the first part anyway. I'll take your word for the second."

"Ah," I nod. "And was that your quota for the week or is more often than that?"

"No, that was my quota for the next few months," She smiled.

|

"Ah," I nod, laughing slightly. "I can see how it would take several months for the words, 'just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there' to slowly work themselves out in your brain."
