She looked at him slightly surprised at the burst of laughter, but then laughed as well, "Ah, well good for the animals, I imagine. Er...do you torture animals a lot then?"

"No," I say very quickly, shaking my head. "Not anymore. Still have destructive tendencies though." I shrug.

"Well, that's a relief," She said, then added hastily, "The not torturing small animals, not the having destructive tendencies thing..."

"Yeah, I probably would have figured that out," I nod, smiling slightly.

"I thought you might, I just wouldn't want it to sound...off," She laughed lightly.

I laugh slightly. "S'pose I might look at you oddly if you said that it was good to have destructive tendencies...." I shrug. "What about you? Any bad habits you want to share with an almost-stranger?"
|

"Bad habits...uhm...well, I can't really think of any, but if you'd like a flaw then I'm a complete coward and have never done anything rebellious or remotely interesting in my life," She laughed lightly.

I raise my eyebrows. "Well... that doesn't sound like much of a life, though I think I can relate. Especially to being a coward."

"No, not really. Would you believe the first time I've ever climbed a tree was a couple of days ago? That's quite sad," She nodded, "But I suppose most people can relate to being a coward."
|
|

"Different levels of cowardice," I shrug, tilting my head. "But yeah, probably. Then I grin. "And if you climbed a tree at your age, I'd say that's interesting and mildly rebellious, so therefore you lied."

"Climbing a tree is interesting and mildly rebellious?" She grinned, "Oh yes, I've done something interesting and mildy rebellious!"

"Congratulations," I laugh. "I'd say it's definitely a start."

"Who knows where I'll go from here?" She joked, shaking her head slightly.

"Tap-dancing on the dining room table, maybe," I say, laughing very slightly. Or having the guts to break away completely.

"You know what? I'm going to try that," She told him, grinning, "I'm going to learn to tap dance, and then I'm going to do that."

I laugh slightly. "Good goal." For a start.

"Thanks to you," She smiled, "I do appreciate your help."

I raise my eyebrows. "I didn't tell you to climb a tree, now, did I?"

"No but you listened to me complain and you gave me an idea for my next stage of rebellion," She smiled.

"All right then," I smile. "Happy to have helped."

She smiled back, then looked back at the floor, absently combing her fingers through the grass again.

I nod at nothing in particular and start picking up the torn-in-half knots of grass, shredding them into even smaller bits of confetti.

She bit her lip lightly, absently tearing away the skin until it bled but not paying much attention to it, instead just looking resolutely at the grass.

I glance up after a moment and notice her staring at the grass. "You okay?" I ask, frowning.

"Hmm," I nod, continuing to make confetti. "S'pose most people do."

"Suppose so," She agreed, nodding slightly.

I nod. "You actually all right though? And should I stop asking that?"

"I've been better, but I've been worse, I'm alright. Are you?"
|
|
|

"Sure," I shrug, mind going back to the argument that I just had with Arden. I run out of grass to make confetti with and pull up several more strands, knotting them carefully.
