"You're not fine. Go and rest."

"I'm fine." I mutter stubbornly,"I need to know he's okay."

"I'll find out. You have just tried to kill yourself, go and rest."

I nearly flinch at the words, my hand going across my arm. "Fine,"

I feel slightly guilty because I knew exactly what reaction the words would bring. I've had similar things said to me enough times over the years, but there's probably no other way to make her listen. I incline my head slightly back to the room, "Go on."

I nod weakly, making my way back to bed. "I need to know he's okay."

"I'll find out," I reassure her.

"I will," I spare her a very brief glance on my way out of the room.

I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "I want to go home,"

I come back a little while later, after finally tracking Alex down and using the emotional blackmail that his hospitalised mother needed to see him to get him away from some healers. He stays asleep the whole time I'm walking, which I don't think he's ever done before. I hesitate a moment outside her door in case she's sleeping, but realise she isn't so I go in anyway, "Found him."

There's a wave of relief as I see Alex in Ian's arm. "My baby," I whisper softly, getting on my feet and walking towards him. I gently take Alex from him, careful not to wake up. "Thank you." I mumble softly, kissing him lightly.

I shrug slightly, making no other response than that.

"Hey baby," I grin weakly, hoisting Alex higher into my arms and he yawns."I'm sorry." I whisper, kissing him softly on the forehead,"So sorry."

I wonder vaguely if I can excuse myself yet, but instead I just clear my throat quietly, "Supposed to be resting."

"It can wait," I mumble softly, looking down at Alex."I'm so sorry." I whisper softly.

"Fine," I mumble, feeling even more like a child, sitting on the edge of the bed."Hey baby,"

I roll my eyes slightly, leaning against the wall next to the bed.

I brush the hair back off his forehead, rocking him back and forth. How could you ever think about leaving this little guy?

I watch them for a moment before I have to look away. It's hard to think about how close she came to dying. I can't imagine being able to look after Alex on my own.

"I love you," I whisper softly, I'm not too sure who I'm talking to. Probably both of them. "So much."

I don't reply, pretending that I know for definite she's talking to Alex although I'm really not sure.

"Yeah, but who's counting?" I reply brusquely, still refusing to meet her gaze. You're being unfair.

"Not now." I whisper softly, knowing he knew full well what I meant. We could fight later, not now.
