"Mum..." "No Sam," Meredith said to her seven year old son without looking up from the price list on the post office desk. "You don't even know what I was going to ask," He replied, leaning against the desk and resting his chin on her arm to look at the price list. Although he wasn't really reading it. "No," She agreed, pushing the hair back off his forehead absently, then making her way over to the owls, holding a letter in her hand. "So how can you say no?" "Sam, please," She answered without looking up, fastening the letter to an owls leg, "Go and do something, you can ask me in a minute." He sighed exaggeratedly and wandered over to the other side of the post office. Not paying attention to him, she carried on with what she was doing. There was no denying she was slightly preoccupied today; receiving letters from all three of one's sisters where they bitched about each other and having to write an impartial reply to all of them took it's toll on a woman's concentration. An owl squawked loudly from the other side of the room and she rolled her eyes skyward, "Samuel David Prophet!" "It wasn't me, Mum!"

"Or me!" I call over, trying to hide my smile. It'd been a long time since I'd seen Mez, but Sam seemed to recognise me so my hope was that she would too.

Meredith promptly dropped and forgot about her letter, turning round immediately. A scowl crossed her face, "You!" But her scowl was already waning, smile flicking at the edges, as she made her way through the sparse crowd in the post office.

I grin, "Yeah, me." Then glance down at Sam as she starts over, "What are the odds on some sort of attack?"

"High. Odds of you running and escaping are very low though, so I wouldn't bother," Sam told him, dead seriously. "Quiet you," Meredith laughed lightly as she reached them, wrapping her arms round him immediately, then drawing back surprise, "You're too thin, and you look dead on your feet, and that scar wasn't there before," She stated, barely resisting the urge to put her hands on her hips. Sam managed to roll his eyes at him without his mother seeing.

I roll my eyes back at him as she hugs me, then close them in frustration, barely resisting the urge to sigh. "I'm fine, Mez."

Sam hid a grin, pulling a face at his mothers back. "You don't look fine, not at all," She pressed, "You need to take better care of yourself. And a haircut wouldn't go amiss. And there's hole in your jeans...honestly, you look like you should be sleeping in a cardboard box," She stopped abruptly and arched an eyebrow, knowing this was entirely possible, "You're not sleeping on the streets again are you?"

I grin slightly at Sam but quickly stop myself before Meredith noticed too much. "I am fine," I insist, "I don't need a haircut, the hole in my jeans isn't bothering me and I am not sleeping in a cardboard box, thank you for your concern but I am just fine, please don't go all mother on me, I don't think I could take it."

Meredith snapped her head around to give Sam a look as she caught him making faces. He immediately stopped and she turned back round again. "Well, if you honestly have no pride in your appearance then fine, let your hair grow over your eyes so you walk into things, let that hole in your jeans go unfixed, fine," She gave a long suffering sigh but grinned all the same, then nodded, "Uh-huh...not sleeping on the streets...I'll believe that when I see it...where are you staying? You're taking care of yourself?" Sam jumped up briefly, sticking his tongue out at the back of his mothers head.

I laugh slightly at Sam. "Yes, Mez, I have no pride in my appearance now stop bugging me," I grin, "Yes, not sleeping on streets, you have my word I'm not. I sleep in a bed, in a house, like a normal person. And yes, I'm taking care of myself fine." Then I laugh as Sam jumps up behind her, reaching past her to pull him back in front of Mez, "Giving your mum trouble, Sam?"

She raised her eyebrow at him, "I don't believe you. You never take care of yourself so you telling me you are now...it's hard to believe," She grinned, only half joking. Sam nodded at him, grinning, "Yep, giving her hell for you."

"Mez, I'm fine," I assure her, "Don't worry." Then I grin at Sam, "Good man."

"You know I will. I sort of assumed you were dead," She muttered, "Not one word, not one rumour, for years. Not of Christopher anyway, I knew you weren't going by your middle names anymore so I did wait to hear something about a Christopher Hunt but nothing." Sam nodded in agreement.

"New name," I shrug, "Go by Ian now."

Her face softened slightly, but she didn't comment on the choice of name, "I see. Well we're still Mez and Sam. Not everyone lives the same lifestyle as you." There was no mistaking the tightness in her voice at these words but she said nothing further. Sam however stuck his tongue out and hissed, still grinning all the time, "Snakey."

I watch her face change, wondering if she's aware she's even doing it, "Go on, say it. Get it over with." Then I sigh softly, at her next comment, tone, "Mez, don't-...be like that, please?" I glance down at Sam, smirking slightly, "I am so gonna laugh if you get put in Slytherin, little git."

She looks at him startled at the invitation to just go ahead and say something she knows that he'd hate to talk about. Usually he'd avoid it at all costs. But, she reminded herself, there was no usually when you haven't spoken to someone in years. "I don't need to say it, there's not much to talk about. I just...maybe it'd be easier to let go with a different name?" She suggested timidly. "I won't get put in Slytherin! I won't!" Sam seems oblivious to the other conversation, instead glaring up at him before she can say anything more. She knew, and was pretty sure that Chris knew as well, he didn't mean the way he was looking at him.

"No," I shake my head at her suggestion, "No, I need it this way." I glance down at Sam and grin, "You might. Just cos your parents are ravens doesn't mean you can escape."
