I slump down at the table with my hands over my face, kneading my forehead. I need coffee. I need sleep. I need... to not spend half the night in the forest stewing over yet another fight. I sigh and shake my head, reaching for some coffee just as someone else grabs it.

"Oh! Sorry!" Lin said, pulling her hand back so that the boy could get it.

"Eh, no problem," I shrug, pulling my hand back and nodding at the coffeepot. "Go ahead... I can wait thirty seconds for caffeine."

Lin smiled at him. "Thanks. I'm Lin, by the way. Kinda new here." she said, picking up the coffee pot and pouring some into her cup.

"Really," I nod. "Seventh-year Slytherin, though, right?" I look around the table then and quickly grab the coffeepot, shaking my head. "Well... duh, for that last part...." I shake my head again and take a gulp of coffee, not caring how hot it is.

Lin laughed. "Yeah, seventh year Slytherin. You?" she asked, taking a sip of her black coffee.

"Same..." I shake my head yet again, for once not adding the face of disgust... not in the presence of my fellows. "Oh, yeah," I add after another sip of coffee. "And I'm Fitzy Patricks... nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too. Baker's the last name, and Aislin's the full first name." she said, smiling at Fitzy.

"Aislin..." I nod, not sure if I'm pronouncing it correctly or not. "Nice... Fitzwilliam Maximilian here." I grimace slightly. "So... did you transfer from another school then?"

I laughed slightly. "Nice name. And no, I was homeschooled. Came here to try to work things out with my ex. Turns out he's engaged again, so I'm just here."

"Ah... well, that must have been... interesting," I say, raising my eyebrows in surprise, then taking another gulp of coffee. "No particular reason for sticking around then? You're just here?"

I smirked slightly. "Well, I have to say that the, erm...." I cast a glance around the hall. "Well, there are certain...appealing... aspects to this school.

I lean back in my chair a bit, frowning. "Such as?"

I laughed. "Well, there are people here, for one."

"You tend to find those hanging around schools," I nod, then glance around the hall. "Or at least early versions of them."

"Isn't it?" I laugh, then shrug. "Anything else holding you here or just the people?" I take a sip of coffee, shrugging again.

Lin laughed. "Nope, that's just about it. I mean, my kids stay here with their dad a bunch, so I get to see them, but..." She shrugged. "I gave them up. I'm not good for them."

"Really?" I blink. There certainly are a lot of small ones running around lately. "Hm.... What's wrong with you exactly?" I shrug, thinking vaguely that I'd probably be more polite if I was awake.

Lin laughed slightly. "Yeah, my ex's got our twins. His twins. I..." she stopped and shrugged. "I'm 17. I can't handle kids yet."

I laugh slightly. "And I probably should have expected an answer like that after asking such a dim question." I shake my head and look into my coffee. "Kids though... yikes...." I shudder slightly.

I nod, taking a sip of coffee. "Nothing wrong with that. Some people shouldn't be parents." Then I wince. "I swear I'm not this rude when I'm awake...."

"Makes sense," I nod, thinking vaguely that she ought to take more responsibility for her mistakes, but managing not to actually say it this time. "People our age should not have kids... just not right. Especially with the world as fucked as it is right now."

Lin nodded. "That's why I'm so glad for Peter, as much as I dislike him. I mean...they're still my kids, and it's nice to know that they're with someone who can protect them."
