I lie with my head over the back of the couch, staring into the hall upside down. Without Poppy to chase after, I was bored senseless. She was probably with Maddie for the day or something. And there were people in the house, I could hear someone, maybe more than one someone walking around elsewhere but it felt like it was just me. Hadn't seen anyone around all morning, just been lying here, sighing softly to myself every now and again.

"You going to do anything with your life or is that it?" I ask, not looking up from the book I was reading on the otherside of the room.

"Holy shit," I jump and sit up too quickly so my head spins, sending a half-assed glare his way, "You scared the shit out of me."

"And you have a new favourite word by the sounds of it," I remark, not looking up at him still.

"Hahaha...wanker," I mutter, moving into a sitting position on the other end of the couch, looking at him properly, then glancing at the book in his hands, "Ray Bradbury?" I guess.

"Only book you've ever read?" I shake my head amusedly.

I look up briefly and grin wearily, "Yeah."

"Only book you'll ever read?" I guess, grinning back.

"Ah...most probably," I laugh weakly, eyes darting back to the floor, unable to hold his gaze for too long.

I sigh, "What's on your mind Chris?"

"Nothing's on my mind," I lie immediately.

"Either you've gotten worse at lying or I've gotten better at reading you, either way that was awful," I snort, moving round to sit on the arm of the couch, watching him, "Come on, what's up?"

"Nothing," I insist, turning the page in my book but no longer reading it.

"Is it..." I pause, thinking, "Hmm...is it Poppy? Or is it...Maddie? Or is something else the matter?"

"Second one," I admit reluctantly.

"Aha, thought so," I nod, "So what's the trouble in paradise Romeo?"

I give him a look, raising an eyebrow, "You're a very strange man, has anyone ever told you that?"

"Yes. Mostly you," I nod with a quick grin, "But you dodged the question. Answer the question damnit."

"How about you take your big nose out of my business bellend?"

"Here we go..." I murmur, "Only trying to help."

"And I'm only telling you to mind your own fucking business," I reply bluntly.

I continue regardless, "I know that must sting right? After Erin and all. Completely natural to be angry and all, but you know it's cos you're scared right? Have you tried talking to her about it?"

"I'm not scared. You don't get it. Stop trying to help. I can work it out on my own." I say shortly.

"I'm not bitter," I mutter.

"You are," I argue, "You're bitter and angry all the time and I bet you don't even know why half the time. You know what's really sad, Christopher? You're one of those bittter old men who end up all on their own angsting about how life passed them by, and you're 18. That's fucking sad, man."

"Well fuck you very much for the psycho analysis, little brother," I say scathingly, getting to my feet, and not looking at him as I passed on my way into the hall.
