my stomach tightens at the thought of matthew and claire. "at least you got a chance to meet your brother and sister."

"I guess," I say quietly, trying hard to push the thought out of my mind that if I hadn't of met them they'd still be alive.

"With all due respect," I say after a heartbeats pause, hands tightening into fists by my sides on reflex, "Matt and Claire don't constitute as siblings. They were good people and I shared blood with them, but I didn't know them."

i decide not to respond to this, not sure how. i'm half-wondering how he got to be this way, but i'm more wondering that if he wasn't with his siblings, his family, where he was. my eyes are drawn to the scars all up his arms again, lingering at thick bandages around his wrists, then back up to meet his eyes again. "where have you been chris?" the question isn't strictly limited to location.

"A family called the Hunts. They adopted me when I was six," I say after a moment. "It was okay," I lie, "I had a brother." I don't really want to lie anymore, so I glance back down at the floor, deciding I might as well admit it because I want to be able to say this to my parents. That's the point. "They were big on blood supremacy, so they pretended I wasn't the product of a squib and a muggle. They were dark wizards too."

i nearly flinch but manage to contain myself. i stay quiet for a moment, then ask. "are you ashamed of your parentage?"

"No," I say honestly after a moment, picking at my bandages, "It makes it harder sometimes. But no, I'm not ashamed of it."

my eyes are drawn to the bandages again and i want to know if it's just self-harm or attempted suicide but i don't want to ask. "what happened with your adopted family? do you still see them?"

I have to pause and think for a moment, before I add, "And my father."

I smile slightly glancing back down at my hands. I can't help but wonder if he'd be so proud of the role if he knew what I was. I decide I'm going to have to put this to the test. Sooner rather than later. "I...uh...I do have something to...tell you though."

my brow furrows slightly, but i don't want to be discouraging. it's more out of concern than anything else. "oh?"

"Yeah," I say off-handedly, pausing while I try to find words. Many different combinations of them and explanations come to mind but none of them seem appropriate somehow so I just grit my teeth and sigh softly, taking my time in rolling up my left sleeve and showing him the mark, keeping my eyes on the floor because I'm not brave enough to be able to look him in the face.

i lean forward curiously, taking in the sight of the mark on his arm. i chuckle slightly. "morbid tattoo chris, but whatever suits you."

"It's-..." I stop the words before they can leave my mouth. It's not a tattoo Dad. I close my eyes for a moment, deciding his naivitey is maybe just a sign that I shouldn't explain to him, then work my face into an amused expression, "Thought you were supposed to have an objection to those sort of things?"
