I frown a moment, then shake my head firmly. "That can't be right. I mean you can do all right without a family, maybe. But not a horrible one."

"Well, obviously," I say, trying not to be too sarcastic. "I'm just saying that a family... or relatives, more like... is no guarantee of turning out better than somebody who hasn't got them."

I shake my head, hard. "Look, I'm not saying family's not a good thing. It's great. But sometimes it's not, and then it's just relatives. People who raise who or happen to share blood with you through no fault of yours. And people like that lower your chances and generally you're better off without them. It probably would have been better to grow up all on my own than with my parents, and I know I'm better off now that they're leaving me alone." I shrug, feeling bad for arguing.

I nod, then laugh very slightly. "I didn't mean your opinions in general, you know. Just that particular one, from many different people." I shake my head. "Always gets to me when people with less-traditional families that are still quite decent tell me that 'at least I have parents.'" I shake my head again, then wince slightly.
