"I'll take that as a yes," I grin, then shake my head and make a tsking sound. "How old are you again?"

She shakes her head. "She's only five..." I say with a sigh. "Younger and younger I swear."

"You'll be a grandmother by thirty," I say, grinning slightly and shaking my head in disapproval at Ashlyn. "If he ever makes you cry I'll beat him up for you, all right?"

She laughs at his comment, as do I. "I think many guys would beat him up. Jay, Riley, you, Draven, and maybe even Ian." I say with a smile.

"Well, she's well-protected then, and I pity whoever does try to go out with her," I say, laughing slightly. "So who are all they?" I ask, not recognizing any of the names she just listed off.

"Well, Jay is my new husband, Riley is my cousin, Draven is one my best friends, and Ian is this one's godfather, so he's sorta family now too." I say pointing at my stomach.

I nod, raising my eyebrows at the news she's pregnant and glancing around at all the small children. "You really are insane," I say, shaking my head, forgetting to say any kind of congratulations.

"Now it's ten. And I have 3 godchildren." I say with a smile. I was used to the fact that people thought I was crazy, but it didn't phase me anymore.

I shake my head. "Totally, utterly crazy. They should lock you in St. Mungo's. Except then, other people would have to take the munchkins, so then they'd let you out."

I gasp at him and then frown. "That wasn't nice..." I say looking down at the table.

"Oh...." I wince, not sure what to say. Nice going, Fitzy. Took it a little too far there. "I really didn't mean anything by it," I say a little uncomfortably.

I look up at him slightly and nod my head, still feeling hurt.

"Really I didn't," I say quickly, feeling awful about it, and wondering vaguely when the last time that happened was. "I just... kept talking without listening to myself," I shrug. "Wasn't supposed to be serious."

I look at him and sigh. "It's alright. I'm starting to get my mood swings." I say to him softly.

I nod. "Right.... Well, sorry anyway." I shrug.

"You're forgiven." I say to him.

I nod again, inexplicably quite grateful. "Don't think I've ever heard those words before," I say, smiling slightly. "Tha... thank you."

I look at him slightly shocked. "No one has ever told you that?" I ask him softly. I've done terrible things, but I've been forgiven plenty of times...

I laugh slightly. "Well, who would?" I ask semi-rhetorically. "Most of my 'enemies' are just people I hexed and never bothered to speak to again. And my sisters... well, Arden is stubborn and Trisha's got no reason to. So no... nobody has ever forgiven me for anything."

I nod understanding him. "Well, you didn't mean it in that way and you said you were sorry." I say with a faint smile.

I nod. Still doesn't mean you had to forgive me. Not if you were someone like Arden, I think a little bitterly, then shake my head. "Still, I appreciate it," I shrug.

I smile. "Your welcome?" I say not sure still how to get off the topic, or respond to his reaction.

|

I shrug again, dropping the topic though I haven't got one to replace it. "So...." I frown slightly at a fairly random thought, and decide it makes as good a topic as any. "What does 'you're welcome' really mean? I mean, it's used to mean, 'your thanks is accepted'... but what's the origin of that?"
|
|
|
Post by Shelby Chou on Jan 5, 2008 17:22:25 GMT
I sit there and think about it for a few minutes. "I think you're welcome means sorta what you said. That the person is accepting your thank you, in a friendly manner, like a politeness measure." I say hoping that wasn't confusing as it sounded to me.

I nod, still frowning thoughtfully the way I always did when presented with a puzzle, always forgetting how angry it makes me look. "I know... it's just, when taken literally, the words don't seem to work the way they're used."

"That's life isn't it..." I say with a sigh. "Nothing is ever what we expect it to me, and when presented with something, it's completely opposite of what we thought it was." I say softly to him.

"Hm." I shrug, frown lessening as I raise an eyebrow skeptically. "Pretty vague... and untrue. Plenty of things can be as we expect."

I shrug. "Plenty of things...." I say, suddenly unable to come up with any good examples. "The sun will rise in the East, etcetera.... It's not like every moment of the day, what happens is unexpected. Quite a bit is very predictable."
