I stare somewhat blearily at the glass of firewhiskey in front of me, wondering if I’m drunk. I have no experience whatsoever with being drunk, so it’s hard to say… but I’m leaning toward a yes. Some role model you are… not that it matters anymore. Now I can’t get that image out of my head… Andra’s solemn face, at the age of eight, when she promised me we’d never, ever drink, even if we were forced on pain of death. Yeah, death. Little late for her to be forced on pain of death now, isn’t it? I close my eyes tightly, hiding my face in my hands as my heart gets stabbed again. You are such a fuck up, just a stupid fucking fuck up…. I think bitterly to myself. It was your decision and you just… just tossed it aside like she was asking to sleep over at a friend’s house. Have you no regard for the gravity of your family’s situation? Can you really, truly be that fucking stupid? I nod slowly, face still in my hands and eyes still closed. Now I do. Now I do and yes I can.

Perry watches the guy by the counter, by the looks of it the guy was drunk. No doubt about it. He wanders over to the counter, singaling the barkeep, then turning to the drunk guy."I'd take it easy if I was you." He replies.

I look up when I hear a voice and see some kid there. "Thanks for the advice, but I'll be fine," I say, with a mix of sarcasm and over-graciousness, feeling unnaturally resentful toward him. I'm not drunk.... Feel slightly... odd... but I'm not drunk.

"Alright," Perry mutters, taking his firewhiskey,"Don't blame me though when the alcohal poising get you." He says, taking a swig of firewhiskey.

"Don't see why I'd do that when I don't even know you," I shrug, picking up the glass again. "No one to blame but myself, right? Just like every fucking other thing."

"It's call sarcasm," He mutters, setting down his half empty bottle of firewhiskey. This guy was beyond drunk, no doubt about that."Got any idea how much you've had to drink?"

"Well, let's see," I say to the ceiling. "More than I've ever had before in my life... though that's not saying much," I add to him, taking refuge in amusing myself to cover the fact that I have no idea.

"First time drinker?" Perry guesses,"And your how old?"

I frown slightly. "Twenty-three..." I say slowly, pretty sure I've just had my birthday recently. Either that or it's pretty close. I shrug slightly. "I made a pact not to with my sister, can't remember why exactly."

Perry shakes his head slightly."Only 'pact' I made my sisters was that I wouldn't push anymore of my cousins out windows,"

"Oh? That's very generous of you," I say, tilting my head at him a bit, not half listening to myself.

"Name's Perry." He says, taking another swig of firewhiskey.

I frown slightly, thrown off by the unexpected introduction. "... Andrew," I say after a moment. "Andrew F- never mind," I say quickly, remembering that it's probably quite stupid to give out my last name to some stranger if not necessary. Not when I've just gotten even more evidence recently that somebody wants my family dead. What the hell we did, I still don't know, but I think it's pretty clear they want us dead, I think, deliberately ignoring the small voice in the back of my head that asks if that would be such a bad thing in my case.

"Good move," He notes on not giving out his last name,"Far too people make that mistake."

"Thanks for your approval," I say sardonically with a slight twitch of my head. And Andra was one of them, I think, trying to wash down the lump in my throat with another gulp of firewhiskey.

"Just a simple word of advice," Perry replies cooly,"Never know who you can trust anymore."

"Including you. Or me," I say musingly, semi-aware that I'm being unusually annoying/infuriating considering I'm talking to a stranger.

"Right again," Perry replies evenly,"But taking in your pissed beyond belief doesn't help your chances, now does it?"

"Probably not," I shrug, even though I'm pretty sure I'm really not that drunk.

"Yeah," He mutters, taking another swig of firewhiskey,"Jack..my cousin..him and a few others were murdered a couple days ago."

I snort softly, raising my glass in a sort of salute before putting it down without drinking any. "We've got something in common then," I say almost casually. "So was... so was my little sister."

"We went from 17 to 14 to 11." Perry mutters under his breath,"Fucking sad." He mutters, raising his firewhiskey bottle to his lips and taking a drink.

I wince a bit automatically even though it takes a few seconds to actually realize what he means. Thirteen to... nine? in the last year? I think, counting the Maywoods in with our family. But then we increased by two.... I shake my head. "Tough," I mutter sympathetically.

I nod again. "Guess so," I shrug, deciding he does have a point. Why do you keep getting up? 'Cause Ariel would fall apart if she lost you too... because Laken needs a substitute big brother right now to help her through this... because you feel obligated to make sure Andra's friends et through the rest of this war if there's anything you can do about it. He really does have a point. "How old are you anyway?" I ask, thinking he strikes me as a kid, but probably of age.

"Everyone has something to look forward too," He mutters, flicking the bottle cap around the counter top. Something to take his mind off his family."18."
