I nod again. "Yeah. I was told that I should watch out for them... might get slimed or painted otherwise." I smile very slightly, then shake my head. No one that little should be dead. They were, what? The same age as River?

"Yeah, those two were quite the little hell raisers." Kaleb mutters, signaling for another firewhiskey. Getting drunk is going to do what exactly? It's not going to bring them back. It'll numb the pain though.

I nod yet again, staring at the tabletop, then look up at him and frown a bit. "How much have you had to drink?" I ask. Seeing as it's my business and all....

"And you need to know that why?" Kaleb asks dryly, raising an eyebrow at her and taking another swig."Four, for you information."

I nod, having no idea whether that's a lot or not and therefore finding the information rather useless. "I don't know... I guess I don't," I shrug.

"It's not a lot," He mutters, setting down his half empty bottle,"It'll take a lot more then this to get me drunk."

|

I nod. "So... are you planning to drink a lot more then?" I ask, frowning slightly with concern, again not really sure why it's my business. Because everyone's business is yours, and everyone's problems become yours as soon as you hear about them, that's why. Because you try too hard to be some kind of hero.

He shurgs,"Maybe." That's a big ten four.

I nod, hesitating a moment before shrugging and shaking my head. "Leave you to it then, I guess." I shrug again and frown at the tabletop, trying to find my circle again.

"You ever felt like someone's death was somehow your fault?" He asks, not turning around to look at her.

I look up, somewhat startled, then nod. "Yes," I say simply, shrugging slightly. ”For all I know you're as bad as him; giving him some justification in his sadistic mess of a head….” ”We should never have let her go out there! Not like that, not distracted… not that late at night, alone.” "Doesn't... doesn't everybody?" I ask, remembering something supposedly comforting I'd been told... and then remembering something else - a conversation with another of Maddie's cousins; the one where I found out about the recent deaths. ”… Fucking saint Kaleb. He abandoned them, left them on their own and ran. Fucking coward….” I wince slightly, deciding it best to never mention that.

"Some people blame others though," Kaleb mutters, instantly thinking about Nathan and how he kept blaming him.

"True...." I say slowly, glancing at him briefly. "I take it.... Have you ever felt like someone's death was your fault?"

"It was my fault." He mutters,"I'm the eldest, I'm suppose to look out for them," He says quietly, more to himself then to her.

I stay quiet for a minute, then shake my head. "That doesn't mean it was your fault."

Then why does it feel like it? "Tell that to Nathan," He mutters taking another swig of firewhiskey.

I stay quiet, knowing I hadn't. I could have argued with him but I didn't, because it probably wouldn't have done any good. Just like any sort of reassurance probably won't do good right now.

"Sorry, didn't mean for you to hear all this." He mutters,"My family, my problems."

"I know some of your family," I shrug. "And know other people who possibly know you. And if you don't talk about problems they spread. And... even if not, I don't mind."

I pause. "Everyone does what?"

"Everyone knows at least one person in this bloody family,"

"Ah," I nod. "I suppose they would."

"That's what happens when you have a big family,"

"Wouldn't know," I mutter, then shrug. And I really am quite glad about that.

"Wish I didn't have such a big family sometimes," He mutters,"Less trouble that way."

"Probably so," I nod. "Not that there are any good ways of getting a smaller family, really."

"You have no clue, mine's getting smaller by the days," He mutters somewhat bitterly.

I wince slightly. Yeah, that was a very well-thought-out comment, now wasn't it? I shrug apologetically, sick of hearing the word 'sorry' come out of my mouth.
