"Most of my friends freak out when I have nothing to say."

I laugh. "Mine just sigh and shake their heads... or occasionally hit me." I shrug. "You'd think your friends would like the quiet for a change," I add, before realizing how insulting that sounds.

"Yeah, I usually get the Shut-Up-For-Once-Look a lot, mainly from my boyfriend." I laugh,"Yeah, they say thay all the time but if I ever was quiet they'd be pretty bored." I grin.

"Think pretty highly of your ability to entertain people, don't you?" I ask with a laugh. "But yeah, I see what you mean. I mean I would like my friends to shut up occasionally, but not for very long. Then they're just being unnatural."

"Really..." I say, unsure whether to laugh or not. "Damn... poor kids." Then I grin. "Every time there's an awkward silence at home, my sister forces everyone present to say something about Ernest Hemingway."

"No idea," I shrug, mystified. "I've learned a lot about Ernest Hemingway, although I don't know how much is true."

"Some writer... muggle of course. Apparently he likes to shoot elephants... or did. Haven't worked out if he's alive or not." I shrug. "Do you have any standbys for getting past awkward silences?"
