I laugh. "Um... I can't say I've ever really thought much about hats." I pause. "My brother used to curse every hat I tried to wear... every winter hat, that is... so it plugged up my ears and I went deaf whenever I put it on. So I started wearing earmuffs instead, and he didn't tell me for years that he'd been doing it. I thought hats just made you deaf." I shrug.
